The avalanche struck at approximately 1730h MST today in an area near Ventigo lake, a route on the way to Mount Iconoclast, a 3251m (10,666 feet) peak approximately 75 km northwest of Golden, BC and 25 km north of the Rogers Pass. The group of skiers had been skiing in the area for the past several days.
The skier was recovered approximately 30 minutes after the avalanche occurred, and was immediately evacuated to the Golden, BC hospital by helicopter. Resuscitation efforts were not successful.
Tannis Dakin of Sorcerer Lodge said she and the staff at the lodge are shaken and deeply saddened by the death of the skier, who was well-known to them, and highly respected. “Our hearts go out to the family of our friend, and we will do all we can to support them at this very difficult time”, she said. Royal Canadian Mounted Police have not released the name of the deceased person, pending notification of next-of-kin.
